Two cancer treatment centers to be built in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia –Two cancer treatment centers will go operational in six months time, said the Ministry of Health (MoH).
The centers are being built in the premises of Black Lion Hospital and Haramaya University at a cost of 120 million birr.
Cancer Prevention and Control Program Advisor at MoH, Dr Kunuz Abdela, said procurement of linear accelerators (LINAC), the devices most commonly used for external beam radiation treatments for patients with cancer, is underway at a cost of 8 million US dollars.
The construction of similar treatment centers is also underway in Hawassa, Mekelle, Gondar and Jima towns.
According to information obtained from MoH, over 61,000 new cancer cases and over 44,000 cancer deaths occur in Ethiopia every year.
