CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, a golden opportunity for Ethiopia’s Coach

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – National soccer head coach Iffy Onuora will find out Ethiopia’s opponents when the draws for the 34th edition of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup will be held here on Saturday.   

Coach Onuora, who in a recent interview with Zecharias Getachew of St. George website, complained about the lack of suitable preparation for the team before the Madagascar encounter, can definitely take advantage of  the CECAFA tournament to test some of his players and his tactics. 

The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup is the East & Central African region’s flagship event and will be contested over a two-week period beginning November 27. This year’s championship will feature Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Zanzibar, defending champions Uganda, hosts Tanzania Mainland, and guest countries such as Zambia, the Ivory Coast and Cameroon. 

Although Zambia has participated in the championship on a number of occasions before, it will be the first time for the Ivory Coast and Cameroon, who are expected to send teams made up of players from their domestic leagues. 

The Ethiopian national team has participated 14 times since the tournament first got underway in 1973, and has clinched the title on 4 occasions (1987, 2001, 2004 and 2005).
