Deresse Mekonnen outsmarts Bernard Lagat to win the Wanamaker Mile Run
New York, USA – Deresse Mekonnen of Ethiopia outsmarted Kenyan-American and 6-time champion Bernard Lagat to win the Wanamaker Mile Run at the 104th Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden tonight in 3:58.58.
Mekonnen, 23, the World Indoor Champion in 2008 and 2010 ran a very smart race by staying right behind Bernard, who expected the Ethiopian to go upfront early.
Bernard was not only outfoxed by Mekonnen but he also tried to pass Mekonnen on the turn not once,   but twice – an amateurish mistake from such world class athlete.
