CECAFA Cup: Yanga wins title, St. George finishes 4th
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – Young Africans “Yanga” of Tanzania beat fellow compatriot Simba 1-0 to win the 2011 CECAFA Kagame Cup here today, while El Mereikh of Sudan defeated St. George of Ethiopia 2-0 for 3rd place finish .
Kenneth Asamoah of Ghana turned out to be the hero for Yanga as he scored the winning goal in the 108th minute.
Yanga was awarded $30,000 prize money for clinching the title, with Simba collecting $20,000 and 3rd place finisher El Mereikh netting $10,000.
Ethiopia’s representative St. George started the competition well winning their group and getting their revenge on APR of Rwanda who beat them 3-1 in last year’s final match.
They followed that with a 2-0 victory over Vital’o of Burundi in the quarter-final, only to lose to Yanga 5-4 on penalty kicks in the semi-final.
Having said that, the 4th place finish should be considered a failure for the club, considering that they’ve reached the final last year. Furthermore, they’ve hired former Italian World Cup winner Giuseppe Dossena as head coach, with the primary goal of turning things around for the club in African competitions.
