2014 FIFA World Cup: Ethiopia advances to group stage with a 5-0 victory over Somalia

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian national soccer team “The Walias” advanced to the CAF group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil with a 5-0 aggregate victory over Somalia.

Ethiopian now joins South Africa, Botswana and Central Africa Republic in Group A.

The two teams played a scoreless tie in Djibouti on November 12.

The Ethiopian team needed just 5 minutes to score its first goal thanks to Oumed Oukri of Defence Force.  However, the team squandered several easy goal scoring opportunities in the first half and failed to increase the score.

So, the two teams went into their dressing rooms with the score at 1-0 in favor of Ethiopia.

Shimelis & Getaneh’s double

Following a disappointing performance in the first half, the Walias were energized in the second part of the game with two quick goals by Shimeles Bekele (62’ and 64’), the former Hawassa City and current St. George player.

Getaneh Kebede of Dedebit who came in place of the injured Massoud Mohammed, scored Ethiopia’s fourth and fifth goals.

Considering the many easy chances that they had, the Walias could have scored 5-6 more goals.

Ethiopian Television (ETV) showed the match live.
