SPORTS: Geremew scores another victory in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – – Musineh Geremew yesterday won the final race in the 2011 Coca-Cola Road Race Series in Addis Ababa to follow his recent win in the 2011 CBE Great Ethiopian Run International 10km.
Victory for Geremew meant that he came away as the overall champion from the three-race series and richer by 50,000 Ethiopian birr ($3,000), the highest ever prize for a road race in Ethiopia.
In second place was Atsedu Tsegaye (21.21 three seconds behind Geremew) with Anmut Minalu a further ten seconds back in third.
In the women’s race Itenesh Diro enjoyed her third consecutive victory over the 7km course in a time of 24.51. Tsigereda Girma (25.09) and Meseret Mengatu (25.31) took the other podium places, although Mengatu claimed the second spot in the overall standings.
The series, a new event in the calendar of races staged by Great Ethiopian Run, was launched to provide opportunities for new athletes and Geremew from the Amhara Region has been one such find. He will now look for races abroad through GSC who will be acting as his agents.
The races were also a first for Ethiopia in delivering chip-timing to all race participants, with an average of 3000 participants taking part in each of the three races.
