Theodor Gebre Selassie joins Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen have beaten off rival bids to seal a deal for Czech Republic full-back Theodor Gebre Selassie (Ethiopia/Czech), following his impressive showing at the European Championship.
Gebre Selassie, 25, has signed a four-year deal with the Bundesliga side as part of a switch rumoured to be worth in the region of €2 million.
Selassie played a key role in Slovan Liberec winning the Gambrinus Liga last season and also impressed in Czech Republic’s progression from the group stage at Euro 2012 – before a difficult evening against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal on Thursday.
“We are pleased that we were able to convince Theodor to come here despite a multitude of offers,” Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs told the club’s official website. “He is a very talented right-back who has made a good impression at the European Championship.”
Gebre Selassie said: “The decision to join Werder Bremen is definitely the right one. Werder are a club with a lot of stability and tradition, they always set their goals very high. I want to follow up a successful season with Liberec by playing well for Bremen.”
He becomes Werder Bremen’s seventh signing of the summer, following a host of exits at the end of the 2011-12 campaign. Manager Thomas Schaaf will be hoping his new signings can gel quickly as they look to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish.
