Dubai launches Sports Destinations Map
Dubai has come up with yet another first with the launch of the Sports Destinations Map with the primary aim of forging a relationship between sports and tourism in the country.
The Sports Destinations Map was unveiled at a press conference at the Dubai Sports Council headquarters by Dr Ahmed Al Sharif, Secretary-General of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC).
“This is a historic moment for all of us, not merely because we have a sports destination map for the first time, but also because Dubai has continued with its role of being a trend-setter in various fields,†Dr Sharif remarked.
The Sports Destinations Map is the first of its kind in the world and the idea was mooted following a recent visit to the Dubai Sports Council by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council.
It was Sheikh Hamdan’s desire that we embark on this unique project so that Dubai would once again firmly establish itself on the world map,Dr Sharif noted.
The Sports Destinations Map lists around 100 venues with GPS coordinates, contact information and Dubai Metro connections to cater to a wide range of physical activity interests from jogging to cycling and diving.
The map also lists details of areas earmarked for fishing, locations for exercising, jogging, cycling, beaches, venues for entertainment along with routes for buses and metro. Shopping areas, malls and significant landmarks such as Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab have also been added on the map.
The map is going to be a ready reckoner for the visitor and resident alike. Everything has been included in the map so that the visitor and the resident alike can have easy access to the sports facilities in Dubai, said Nasser Aman Al Rahma from the Dubai Sports Council.
This is the first time ever that such a sports destinations map is being printed and we thank Dubai Municipality in a special way for making this possible,he added.
The maps will be available in print form at various places in the country including ENOC petrol stations, Virgin Megastores and Magrudys, Borders and Jashanmal outlets.
The print edition to be out in coming weeks have been priced reasonably and we will have the map in electronic form as well in the future,Al Rahma added.
