Ethiopia to Host 2013 Kagame Cup
The Council of East and Central Football Association [Cecafa] has given Ethiopia the rights to host next year’s Kagame Club championships.
Long-serving Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye told Times Sport yesterday that Ethiopia was the only country that had shown interest earlier to host the annual club regional championship.
“They [Ethiopia] want to organise the tournament in September but we will give them up to the end of January to bring it closer to May or June. If they can’t do that, we can’t play in September.
“They have been told to give us the exact date not beyond July. The club championship is a very important tournament in our zone,” said Musonye.
According to Musonye, Ethiopia had put in their bid last year, so they were just enforcing their intent to organise it next year and there was no better country willing to do it earlier than that.
“So that is why we have given them until the end of January to tell us if they will host it or else we find an alternative”.
Tanzania’s Yanga won the 2012 title for the second year running after beating local rivals Azam in the final in Dar es Salaam.
Rwanda’s representatives and three-time winners APR, lost the third place playoff contest 2-1 to guests, DR Congo’s AS Vita.
President Paul Kagame has been sponsoring the tournament to a tune of $60,000 in prize money since 2001.
