St. George advances on away-goal rule
Cairo, Egypt – St. George of Ethiopia advanced to the CAF Confederation Cup final stages on away goal rule. After defeating ENPPI of Egypt 2-0 in Addis two weeks, the Saints lost 3-1 today in Cairo. The two teams were leveled at 1-1 at half-time.The aggregate score was 3-3.
A hat-trick by ENPPI striker Vincent Die Foneye is not enough to prevent ENPPI from exiting the African Confederation Cup at the hands of Ethiopia’s Saint George.
Egypt’s ENPPI scored twice in the last five minutes to secure a 3-1 home victory over Ethiopia’s Saint George but waved goodbye to the African Confederation Cup on the away-goal rule following a 3-3 aggregate draw on Sunday.
ENPPI’s Ivorian striker Vincent Die Foneye opened the scoring after 25 minutes but Tesfaye Alebachew left the hosts with an uphill climb after leveling the score 12 minutes later.
Die Foneye struck twice on 84 and 87 minutes to complete his hat-trick and put ENPPI within one goal from reaching the group stage but Saint George held out to eliminate the Egyptian outfit.
The Confederation Cup has eluded Egyptian clubs since it was introduced in 2004 by merging the African Cup Winners’ Cup and the CAF Cup in a single competition.
