Sports Commission blows past last year’s record, looks forward to remainder of 2013
Press Release
Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission exceeds 2012’s numbers with huge year-to-date totals
GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH, ALA. – With the addition of many athletic events and unwavering community support, the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission (GSOBSC) topped 2012’s record-breaking year as of August 2013, directly impacting coastal Alabama tourism. As the result of close to 90 events hosted so far this year, the year-to-date total direct visitor spending is nearly $26 million, producing 65,102 room nights. Total spending in 2012 was $22.5 million, producing 64,076 room nights.
“It’s with great excitement we announce sports room nights have surpassed 2012’s totals in just eight months,†said Beth Gendler, vice president of sales for GSOBSC. “As with every year, our outcomes are truly the result of the outstanding partnerships we have with Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, the Cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce, our sports commission sponsors, the local community, industry partners and volunteers. Without community support, we could not function as an organization in bringing high-caliber events to Alabama’s Gulf Coast.â€Â
New and exciting sporting events for 2013 included The Color Run in May, the World-Beater All-Beach 10K Race & Relay in August and the Xtreme Obstacle Challenge, which will take place in November. Approximately 17 events remain for the year, most notably the SEC Women’s Soccer Championship, Kaiser Realty Coastal Half-Marathon, 5K and one-mile fun run and NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship.
