Great Ethiopian Run launches children’s race
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - The biggest road race in Africa, the Great Ethiopian Run, has launched a children’s race that will take place in Janmeda on November 23, 2013.
Haile Gebresellasie, founder and manager of the Run, addressed a press conference at the Hilton Hotel on Wednesday (Oct 2). The race is expected to host 3500 children, with age categories under-5, under-8 and under-11, while also providing an opportunity for children with disability.
As adopted in the adult version, the message for the children’s race will highlight child and maternal care. Registration for the 2013 Plan International Ethiopia children’s race opens on Monday October 7, 2013, with the fee 50 Birr per child. A fundraising launch coincided with the announcement of the children’s race registration, supported by Plan International Ethiopia under its banner, “Because I am a Girlâ€Â, and World Vision Ethiopia’s promotion, “Child Health Nowâ€Â.
Children’s races have become a highly popular feature of the Great Ethiopian Run events, giving children the opportunity to emulate their heroes as well as turning the weekend into a family affair. On a related note, the Great Ethiopian Run annual festival has been scheduled to take place on November 24, 2013 with the theme “Running for a causeâ€Â. This year campaign will build on previous fundraising efforts that have raised nearly 4 million Birr (USD 210,000), for the benefit of a dozen charities, according to the organizers.
