Nashville, TN (PRWEB) - The Kevin Turner Foundation has announced Climb For Kevin, a fundraising expedition to the summit of Africa’s legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro to generate awareness and funding for ALS and concussion research.

The Climb For Kevin campaign aims to raise $100,000 on behalf of The Kevin Turner Foundation, a non-profit organization created to help fund research efforts and raise awareness about the emerging connection between ALS and repetitive brain injury. Turner played fullback for the University of Alabama (1988-91), New England Patriots (1992-94), and Philadelphia Eagles (1995-99) before being diagnosed with ALS in 2010. Individuals interested in supporting the campaign can make a tax-deductible donation or create their own fundraising team at the official Climb For Kevin CrowdRise page.

Popular Atlanta-based SiriusXM radio host and ACC Network television broadcaster Rachel Baribeau is leading the two-week expedition, scheduled to depart from the U.S. on March 18 and return on April 4, 2014. The climb up and down the 19,341-foot mountain, located in Kilimanjaro National Park in northeast Tanzania, takes approximately seven days to complete. The trip also includes an optional three-day safari.

Corporate donors HP, SiriusXM, Chick-fil-A Bowl and Xtera Communications have already joined the Climb For Kevin campaign, pledging support to the cause via financial contributions, product donations and media coverage.

“I want to personally thank my good friend Rachel Baribeau and our corporate friends at HP, SiriusXM, Xtera and the Chick-fil-A Bowl for their generous support and commitment,” says Turner. “I can’t tell you how much it means to me to see people stepping up to the plate to help fight this disease and also learn more about the link to repetitive brain injury. I’ve met so many people that have already moved mountains, and now they are literally climbing them. I feel truly blessed. I only wish I could make the climb myself.”

Turner emerged as a prominent figure in the recent concussion litigation between the NFL and more than 4,500 of its former players. National media outlets including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, HBO, USA Today, CNN, CBS News and The New York Times have covered Turner’s story, which was also documented in the Jon Frankel-produced documentary, “American Man: Kevin Turner’s Price For Gridiron Glory.” Since 2010, The Kevin Turner Foundation has raised nearly $500,000 for ALS research and awareness.
