Ethiopian Airports Enterprise to Upgrade Baggage Handling System
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise (EAE) is going to install a new baggage handling system (BHS) at the Bole International Airport at the cost of 92 million Br.
The construction of new BHS will be commencing on September 2014.
The current BHS was installed 12 years ago and can only handle 1,500 bags per hour, according to the Enterprise’s Public Relations & Communications Office Head, Wendim Teklu. Nevertheless, the upcoming BHS can handle up to 6,000 bags an hour.
The number of passengers that use Bole International Airport increased from a little less than one million to 6.5 million and expected to reach to 20 million by the year 2017, according to Wendim. The number it airplanes that have been flying also rose from 19 to 45 airplanes in a single day.
In addition to installing a new BHS, a design work for the expansion of the passengers’ terminal is also completed and the construction work will begin soon, said Wendem.
