Inter Edges Real Madrid in Penalty Kick Shootout
Inter outlasted Real Madrid on penalties 3-2 after a 1-1 draw in front of a sellout crowd at University of California Berkeley’s Cal Memorial Stadium.
The match would be decided by a penalty kick shootout for the first time in the 2014 International Champions Cup after Madrid and Inter ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
Gareth Bale opened up the scoring for Madrid in the 10th minute with a blast from well outside the 18-yard-box. Bale’s strike remained the lone goal of the match until Inter was awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute of regulation, which was slotted home by Mauro Icardi.
Nemanja Vidic, Juan Jesus, and Mauro Icardi converted their penalties for Inter while Juan Pablo Carrizo made stopped two of the kicks.
Icardi finished the match with two goals, both on penalty kicks.
