Addis Ababa-Adama Expressway to Open for Service
The Addis Ababa-Adama Expressway is set to start serving the public tomorrow after three years of construction.
The six-lane expressway which is also the first of its kind in Ethiopia cost over 10 billion birr 80 percent of which is financed by Export-Import (EXIM) Bank of China due to be paid in 20 years. It is also the first toll road in Ethiopia that extends some 76 kms to Adama.
The Toll Road Enterprises which is established to manage such roads announced three types of road fares to be applied in the newly opened expressway. The enterprise set 66 cents/kilometer for small automobiles, 72 for medium size vehicles and 92 cents/kilometers for heavy trucks.
EXIM is also expected to finance an extension project to the Addis-Adama Expressway which will connect the road to Hawassa, the capital of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Regional States, via Mojo town of the Oromia Regional State.
The enterprise projected to collect some 300 million birr in the first year of operation.
