Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Unpaid for the past months in the Egyptian Premier League side Al Ittihad Alexandria, Oumed Oukri returns home likely to rejoin his former club Saint George in the league season’s second round.
Helping Saint George to its record 11th Premier League title and winning top scorer of the season with 14 goals, Oumed’s move to Alexandria for the unofficial transfer fee of USD 24,000 was a much publicized sports affair. First Salhadin Said, currently with the continent’s most successful side Al-Ahly, then Oumed to Alexandria many believed Ethiopian footballers could find a better destination than Sudan and Yemen.
Despite scoring important goals to earn his side import ant victories, including the historic 4-1 away demolishing over Al-Ahly, Ethiopian national striker Oumed claimed that the club failed to pay his salary for several months, thus he is on the verge of cancelling his two year contract. Oumed told reporters “I think Al-Ahly is the only the well structured professional club in Egypt, the rest are not up to standards. Therefore, I don’t think I can go on like this,”
Famous for his long volleyed goals, Oumed’s next destination is rumored to be his former club Saint George, which has been busy looking for a striker. Sources said he will join the defending champions when the mid season transfer window opens at the end of this month. Second in the league table with 18 points from eight matches, football fans suggest that The Horse Men need to find a well accomplished goal hunter thus Oumed may be the answer. Although no official statement came from the club, expectation is high that Oumed will don the bright yellow jersey of Saint George during the second round.
