Angola exits CHAN 2016 on a high with a win over Ethiopia

Angola-Ethiopia

Angola crushed any hopes of Ethiopia’s progression in the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2016) with a well worked out 2-1 defeat at the Amahoro Stadium on Monday evening.

Ethiopia headed into the tie with a slim chance of reaching the quarterfinals if they beat the Palancas Negras and DR Congo got the better of Cameroon in another group “B” match played at Huye, but the gods of football smiled the other away as they tumbled and Cameroon shocked favorites Congo DR 2-1 to top the group and seal their fate.

After a colorless first half, Angola returned better focused in the second stanza as they went ahead through Ary Papel goal in the 53rd minute. The Primerio De Agosto forward who scooped the match of the match accolade was to score again in the 72nd minute from Regio Francisco Zalata assist to put the match beyond Walia Ibex’s reach.

Seyoum Tesfaye pulled one back for the Walias but it was too late in the evening to spark a comeback, with Angola warding off any threat coming their way.

Angola finished third in the group with three points, while Ethiopia are rock bottom with just a point having failed to get a win in their three matches, both are however out of the tournament.

Group leaders Cameroon will face Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals while second placed DR Congo will lock horns with host Rwanda at the same stage.
