Ethiopian Women’s Premier League: Dedebit defeats CBE 2-0 to clinch title
Dedebit have been crowned champions of the 2015/16 Ethiopian Women’s Premier League after beating rivals Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) 2-0 in the Playoff final on Saturday, 2 July 2016 in Hawassa.
The ‘Blues’ finally laid their hands on the league trophy after a three-year wait as Commercial Bank crumbled in their pursuit of an unprecedented fourth title on the trot.
The ‘bankers’ dominated the proceedings for the opening 25 minute, but surprisingly it was Dedebit that shot into the lead with Loza Abera breaking the deadlock on 32 minutes.
Abera doubled the lead on 56 minutes converting a penalty to seal victory for Commercial Bank.
In the third place match, Defence Force triumphed 3-0 over Dashen Beer. Yemiserach Lakew put the Army side in front before Fikerete Birhanu grabbed a brace to wrap up victory.
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia’s striker Shitaye Sisay was adjudged the ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the season.
Her club-mate Abera scooped the top scorer prize after bagging 10 goals in the Playoffs and a further 47 goals during the zonal competition.
Veteran goalie Liya Shiberu of Dedebit won the Goalkeeper of the season award whilst Coach of the season went to Dedebit’s Firew HaileMariam.
Defence Force grabbed the Fair Play prize, and Lidiya Tafese and Wegeayehu Zewede selected as referee and assistant referee of the season respectively.
