Ethiopian Premier League: Salhadin Said signs record contract extension

International striker Salhadin Said landed a two year contract extension with the 16 time defending Ethiopian Premier League champions Saint George. Team skipper Degu Debebe central defenders Aschalew Tamene, Salhadin Bargecho, midfielders Mentesenot Adane and Natnaiel Zeleke each signed a two year contract while left full back Abebaw Butako and right winger Behailu Assefa were each handed a one year extension.

Following his return home after a failed trial with Egyptian clubs, Ethiopian football number one goal machine Salhadin has extended his contract with Saint George signing a two year contract. Though the amount of the transfer money is as usual unofficial, insiders tipped that the striker who played a key role in helping Saint George to a fourth back to back title and a historic African Champions’ League group stage became the highest paid footballer in the country pocketing a reported net 135,000 Birr monthly salary. Since many transfers especially those with foreign players hardly coming official Salhadin’s new contract means more than four Million Birr for two years thus a new record for Ethiopian Footballers at home.

In the meantime the defending champions further strengthened their squad handing contract extensions for six of their senior players including team captain Degu Debebe and Abebaw Butako.

Though different camps kept quiet about who is coming to replace the Dutch head coach Martinus Nooij who returned home at the end of last season following serious illness, a number of new signings have already joined Saint George thus making them once again indisputable Ethiopian Premier League heavyweights. Goalkeeper Lealem Berhnu, left full back Abdulkerim Mohammed, striker Ume Mohammed, midfielders Gadisa Mebrate, Mulualem Mesfin and Tadelle Mengesha are the new signings.
