Water Sports Tourism Gets Boost As Watamu Declared Best

Kenyan water sport tourism received a major boost following the declaration of Watamu Beach as one of the best in Africa at a time it was hosting the international deep sea fishing tournament.

The tournament hosted in Watamu’s Hemingways Resort attracted over 50 anglers from across the globe for the annual event which has been running for the last 17 years.

Both Watamu and Diani beaches were named among the top in Africa by CNN Travel. Kenya’s pristine Watamu and Diani beaches in the country’s coastal region scooped the second and third places respectively as best beach attraction in Africa. Sharm el-Sheikh beach of Egypt took the first slot.

Water sports in Kenya are not limited to fishing, swimming or diving. One can enjoy other activities ranging from boat racing to kite surfing, scuba diving, water rafting among others.

The waters off Watamu are established as among top deep sea fishing destinations globally and home to six of the Billfish species, and now Kenya hopes to leverage on it to promote water events tourism across the country.

Anglers catch and tag the fish the release them for conservation purposes while the proceeds of the annual international Deep Sea fishing tournament go to community projects.
