B.A.A. 10K: Mamitu Daska shatters course record

BOSTON (CBS) – Defending champions Stephen Sambu of Kenya and Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia won the 2014 B.A.A. 10k in Boston today, as Daska shattered the women’s course record.

Both ran the fastest 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) times in the world so far this year, according to the B.A.A.

Sambu held off 2012 and 2011 champion Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, pulling away in the final mile to finish in 27 minutes and 25 seconds, six seconds off the course record.  Kenya’s Daniel Salel finished third.

Daska set a new course record in the women’s race, winning in 31:04.  The previous record was 31:36, set in 2012 by New Zealand’s Kim Smith.

Daska earned a total of $17,500 with her win, $10,000 for finishing first and $7,500 for setting the course record.
