Addis Ababa –Ethiopia and Ghana played out a 2-2 drawn game in a FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final round qualifier on Saturday in Addis Ababa.

The visiting Black Princesses of Ghana went into the lead after just four minutes through Kate Adu Agyemang, to silence the home crowd.

Loza Abera restored parity on 14 minutes before firing the hosts into the lead for the first time six minutes later.

The visitors scored the equalizer on 79 minutes through Rafia Al Hassan Kulchirie to give her side an advantage ahead of the second leg in a fortnight.

Ethiopia’s two-goal heroine Abera was disappointed in her team’s inability to finish the game on a winning note.

“Like I always say, scoring is the not the end result but winning is the best. I am not happy today because we did not achieve what we wanted,” said Abera.

Elsewhere in Abuja on Friday, Nigeria beat South Africa 2-1 in a hotly contested game. Teenage sensation Veronica Chinwendu broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark before an own-goal by Tiisetso Makhubela on 44 minutes gave the Falconets a 2-0 goal lead at the break.

Gabriela Salgado reduced the deficit on 89 minutes, to give Basetsana a glimmer of hope ahead of the return in two weeks.

The winners after the return legs will represent Africa t the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea next year.
