Nigeria won gold in the women’s football event at the 12th African Games Rabat 2019 after beating rivals Cameroon 3-2 on penalties in the final on Thursday at the Stade Boubker Ammar in Sale.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was the heroine for the Nigerians saving three successive penalty kicks as the Falconets claimed gold for the first time since the 2007 edition in Algiers (Algeria).

After a barren stalemate during 120 minutes, the 2003 winners cruised to their third title making them the most successful team in the history of the quadrennial multisport event.

A repeat of the earlier meeting at the group stage which ended one-all, the trio of Folashade Ijamilusi, Esther Ogbonna and Catherine Kenneth converted their penalties for Nigeria whilst Flore Kameni and Henriette Kameni scored for Cameroon.

Nnadozie saved the kicks of Zouwairatou Moussa, Colette Ndzana and Alexandra Takounda whereas Nigerian substitutes Dooshima Tarnum and Grace Chinyere also failed to convert their kicks.

Host Morocco had earlier claimed bronze after beating Algeria 2-1 in the third place match on Wednesday in El Jadida.
